Director of Music (Part-Time)
The Newman Centre at the University of Toronto aims to be the spiritual home for Catholic students on the University’s downtown campus. The parish has a diverse music ministry, with one main music ministry each for the 11 a.m. and the 7 p.m. Sunday Masses. The music for the 11 a.m. Mass features a traditional SATB choir with piano. The 7:00 p.m. music ministry plays music from the Gather Hymnal, as well as music from the contemporary Christian music genre. Reporting to the Pastor and Chaplain, the incumbent will conduct the choir for the Sunday Morning 11:00 a.m. Mass, which features a traditional SATB choir with piano. One rehearsal per week is required. Main responsibilities of the Position: Serve as Director of Music and conductor of the Sunday morning 11 A.M. Mass, including Christmas and Holy Triduum celebrations; Plan, select, rehearse and implement liturgically-appropriate music at the Sunday morning 11 A.M. Mass; Work with other parish Facilitators of Song and musicians to ensure a high level of performance and proficiency with regards to music in the Liturgy; Oversee all selections of music for liturgies made by the Facilitators of Song; Serve as primary contact and provide parish music policy guidelines for those seeking music for weddings, funerals, parish reconciliation services and other liturgies; Develop performance skills through informal/formal instruction and modelling; Attend liturgy committee meetings and any meetings relating to liturgical music; Actively recruit new members to the Newman Centre’s Music Ministry; And other duties as required. Pax Christi Chorale, Toronto, ON Assistant Conductor: Pax Christi Chorale is a 90-voice auditioned oratorio choir drawing together singers from across the GTA, including local Mennonites and many from other faith traditions and cultures. A sixteen voice Chamber Choir is incorporated within the choir. The Pax Christi Youth Choir, conducted by Lynn Janes is in its second season. Trinity Anglican Church, Cambridge, ON Trinity Anglican Church in Cambridge, Ontario, seeks a Director of Music effective September, 2010. Following a remarkably successful period of transition in its spiritual and musical life, Trinity has recently emerged with a clear sense of its mission and how this calling can be accomplished through its various ministries. Notably, the music ministry has charted a course which includes high respect for the finest music of the past as well as looking ahead to many more recent and innovative forms of musical expression. We are seeking an energetic, highly creative individual with a sound background in organ and choral work who is not afraid to use our resources in innovative ways. These resources include a well-balanced choir of 15 including paid section leads, a bellchoir and director of 10 players, and several percussion players. The instruments include a 1974 Casavant III/32 organ, a Steinway piano and a variety of percussion instruments which we often use to accompany hymns and worship songs. We do not have a praise team. While a background in Anglican liturgy is preferred, it is not mandatory. Other skills which would be an asset in this position, though not mandatory, include some familiarity with notation software, music arranging and the ability to play other instruments. As important as the musical skills is a passion for ministering to your musical team and the congregation through patience, encouragement and teaching. The position requires 18 hours per week and the salary will be based on RCCO guidelines. There is one musical Sunday service at 10:00, plus occasional services throughout the year. Rehearsals are held each week with the choir, the handbell choir and the percussion group.
